Do you have a question regarding your vehicle's air conditioning?
Below are answers to some of the most common questions our
technicians are asked. We hope that you find the answer you are looking
for, but please feel free to contact us if your require more information,
please call or email us.
Why should I have my air conditioning serviced?
A poorly maintained air conditioning system will use more fuel, costing you
money, and will wear out more quickly. If your system is not operating
as it should, it will fail to demist your vehicle in the winter
weather and won't keep you cool through summer.
What gas does my car use?
If your car is from 1993 or earlier, it will probably use a gas
called R12 (Freon). Cars built after this date tend to use
R134a. R134a is a safer, more environmentally friendly gas.
R12 is now banned across most parts of the word because it has a
harmful effect on the ozone layer. If your vehicle still uses R12 gas, this
will need replacing. To identify your car's gas type, look on the system's
pipe work for a service port. If it has an external thread and looks like a
car tyre valve, you have an R12 system. If the port is much larger than a
car tyre valve and has no external thread, you are running on R134a.
There should also be a label under the bonnet stating which gas is used,
but these tend to disappear over time.
Why can't I just have my system topped up?
It is very important that the right amount of gas is added to your system to
ensure it performs as it should. Too much or too little can lead to
component failure and even the breakdown of the whole system. To
ensure you get the right amount, all existing gas will be removed from
your air conditioning system and new gas carefully weighed and added.
Skipping the oiling and vacuum stage can also lead to damage and failure
of your compressor. Our full service ensures that all components of your
system get the right care and attention, preventing failure and promoting
longevity
How often does my air conditioning system need servicing?
As a general rule, we recommend you have your system serviced every
2-3 years. Over time, your system can absorb moisture and allow gas to
escape and this will slowly degrade performance. Regular maintenance
will ensure your car keeps its cool.
